23/03/05 DTV Network Must be Robust and Future-Proof Intellect has today called on Ofcom and the Government to provide the best, most robust, and future-proof DTV network possible for the UK, allowing for increases in capacity wherever possible and for the introduction of new services such as High Definition.
In its response to the Planning Options for Digital Switchover Consultation the trade association for the UK hi-tech industry advised Ofcom that benefits from any improvement in capacity would only be gained through the introduction of new, high quality services rather than 'more of the same'. It also recommended a move to the use of 8K transmissions, advising that this would help develop and improve the network further.
Commenting on the consultation response Laurence Harrison, Director of Consumer Electronics at Intellect said; "Fundamentally we believe that above all else it is the responsibility of the Government and Ofcom to provide the best, most robust and future-proof network possible for the UK. The development of the network must also allow for increases in capacity wherever possible and for the introduction of new services such as High Definition. 'More of the Same' simply won’t cut the mustard for consumers whose technological expectation are rapidly increasing, as large screen flat panel products and HD Gaming become more common-place in viewers’ homes."
He continued, "In addition Intellect recommends a move to the use of 8K transmissions, as it will help develop and improve the network further. However, Intellect warns that the switchover of the 80 main transmitters could potentially create a small, but significant number of legacy products with 2K only receivers that would require conversion or replacement. The most serious legacy problems will occur with Integrated Digital TV (idTV) products and will also affect some Set Top Boxes. Intellect believes that Government, as the policy owners, must consider providing support for the owners of such products."
