Intellect Welcomes Publication of ID Cards Bill Biometric Enrolment Trial – Vital to understanding the capabilities of industry Intellect has today welcomed the publication of the ID Cards Bill and the results of the Passport Service Biometric Enrolment Trial Report. It considers both documents invaluable in understanding current technological capabilities and refining requirements ahead of any future procurement. Following the launch of the Report, John Higgins, Intellect Director General said, "For the ID Cards project to be a success it is imperative that industry and government have a complete understanding of the capabilities of the technologies being considered. The Passport Service biometric enrolment trial brings government and industry one step closer to this in-depth level of understanding. It has provided us with initial understandings of which biometrics will, and won't, be suitable for use in the ID Cards Scheme proposed roll out of 2008." "Industry and government will now work together to digest the findings of the trial. This will be as part of the ongoing consultation process, and will build on the work already achieved between Intellect and the Home Office over the past three years." "We believe that early supplier engagement between customers and suppliers is fundamental to government modernisation project success. Only through a comprehensive understanding of the industry, its capacity and its capabilities will the Government be in a position to develop an ID Card scheme capable of delivering on its promises to citizens." "Intellect members and the wider UK technology industry have the ability to meet the technological challenges created by the Government's ID Cards proposals, and are confident that the deadlines can be met. We would invite all who express concern about the technological implications of the Card to engage with us in a robust discussion."
