‘Pay is only one piece of the puzzle to attract women in IT’, says Intellect

Intellect responds to the women and work commission report: shaping a fairer future

Intellect, the trade association for the UK hi-tech industry, has today welcomed the recommendations from The Women and Work Commission’s report: Shaping a Fairer Future, but also believes more can and should be done collectively by government, industry and unions.

Commenting on the findings of the report, Carrie Hartnell, Programme Manager at Intellect said:

“While we welcome the recommendations made, we urge industry to maximise the potential of their workforce irrespective of gender, race or age if we want UK to remain world leaders. Government, industry and unions must come together to discuss and examine pay schemes. This is fundamental in attracting the right people. Failing to address such issues will affect our global competitiveness.

If we want our organisations to grow then we must consider all the issues, not just pay; lack of flexible working, male-dominated environment, industry culture and company values and practices, are the core reasons why the IT sector is unattractive to women.

It is vital for the UK's productivity and competitiveness that the IT industry harnesses all of its skilled labour force potential. To meet the continuing growth in the use of IT, we need to encourage more people to consider IT related careers and ensure that professional women in this sector are able to contribute fully at all stages in their career.

The IT industry must ensure that we are doing all that we can to attract, motivate and retain women in the workplace. Through the work of Intellect's Women in IT Forum, we will continue to work with our members and the Government in order to make IT for women more appealing.”
