eAware – Information security for the citizen

eAware is an EU funded project aimed at providing citizens with the skills and knowledge necessary to be safe and secure online. Tackling security, both in terms of the perceived risk and real risk, must be a priority in addressing barriers to the take up of online services. eAware will produce a simple and practical guide to delivering information security awareness for the citizen later in the year. Pushing this information out and reaching as many people as possible is essential to the project's success.

eAware events take place in eight other EU countries this summer. Intellect kicked off the UK's contribution to the eAware project on Wednesday with an all day event bringing together speakers from Local and Central Government, Law Enforcement, ICT related associations and ICT vendors. The goal was to examine the role of local government in promoting information security awareness among the non-specialist ICT user.

Intellect's project leader, John Harrison commented "The UK event is all about understanding the role of Local Government in creating this awareness and how it could be implemented. eAware supports the OECD security guidelines issued last year which is all about creating a culture of security so that all users can get the maximum benefit from eGovernment and eBusiness services. Changing culture is difficult and people must see the change as attractive, feasible and relevant - Local Government are well qualified to deliver the eAware messages with their eGovernment services."

Liz Terry, Assistant CEO of Slough Borough council, speaking at the meeting, explained why she is supporting eAware "In my opinion, Local Government is uniquely placed to reach out to the citizen with messages about information security awareness and help people to work safely online."

The UK's eAware project/event is supported by IAAC, SOLACE, Socitm and SAINT. The next stage is to document the findings of the event, with recommendations for both the eAware guidelines and how UK Local Government could help take eAware forward.
