Intellect Pledges Industries Commitment to Environment

Intellect has today reaffirmed the commitment of the IT, Telecommunications and Electronics industries to the protection of the environment through its endorsement of the message in the DTI/DEFRA WEEE / ROHS guidance documents.

This commitment comes as Intellect itself underlines the increasing need for manufacturers to take prompt steps to mitigate the financial impact that the WEEE and RoHS Directives, calling on all businesses to take early action in order to be best placed to gain market advantage.

Regardless of whether businesses are large multinationals or have a specialised national niche market, they will need to assess, and where necessary change, the content of products and review their design.

Speaking at the launch of the new campaign, Joy Boyce, Chair of Intellect’s Environment Committee, commented, "The WEEE and RoHS Directives present the electronics industry with a major opportunity to demonstrate once again its collective environmental good practice."

She continued, "We are one of the largest and most successful industries in the UK. It is therefore imperative that we work together and take cost effective and environmentally sound action thus ensuring our continued success whilst also taking this opportunity to further enhance our reputation as good corporate citizens. Early and effective action, coupled with high levels of co-operation up and down the supply chain, will ensure we comply with the new legislation in the most cost-effective way."

Intellect members have been involved in the development of the Directives over a number of years and so are aware of the requirement for an effective and equitable implementation and proper planning. Intellect again stresses that it is only companies that meet the challenge and remain competitive who will survive and flourish, and the sooner they can take action the better.
