Intellect Welcomes DTI's Call for 'Digital Television for All' Intellect, the UK association for the IT, telecommunication and electronics industries, has today (Thursday) welcomed the DTI’s new 'Digital Television for All' research, which focuses on accessibility and usability of digital television equipment, and considers the resulting recommendations to be an important contribution that will ultimately help to facilitate the take-up of digital television in the UK.
Commenting on the research and the recommendations Hugh Peltor, DiTV Campaign Director at Intellect said, "For consumer electronics manufacturers the challenge has always been to design and manufacture products that are easy for consumers to use. Digital technology provides a new challenge, but not one that cannot be met, and as proof of this five years after launch in the UK nearly half of homes are now watching digital television.
The Report's findings support Intellect's long-held view that the ideal solution for consumers is the integrated digital television(idTV) receiver which consumers should see as the natural replacement for their analogue TV set. Low cost Set-Top-Boxes have been and continue to be critical in stimulating the volume take-up of digital television that the Government requires and will remain so with 50 million TVs and 30 million VCRs still to convert to digital. The relationship between Industry and Government has entered an even more vital stage, which we consider to be the critical enabler to the take-up of digital television and ultimately the successful switch over in 2010."
As part of this relationship Intellect and its consumer electronics manufacturers membership have been involved not only with The Generics Group production of 'Digital Television for All', but also with the ITC study, Easy TV 2002 Research Project and the Go Digital Trial.
Following these activities, early in 2004, Intellect in partnership with the DTI, will be demonstrating digital television receiver installations in various domestic environment, with the purpose of highlighting the greater choice, higher quality pictures and sound and exciting new services including interactivity that digital television will provide the entire UK public.
