Innovation and Growth for UK electronics industry: New team to tackle long term development

The UK electronics industry received a boost today with the launch of the new Electronics Innovation and Growth Team (EIGT) which will address the long term development and prosperity of the industry.

A steering board will examine the factors affecting the UK and global electronics industry and identify the challenges and opportunities it will face over the next 7 years. The board, made up of senior representatives from across the industry, will draw up a vision of the industry of the future and present a set of recommendations to the Government by next June. The electronics sector, led by UK trade association Intellect, identified with the DTI the need for the EIGT earlier this year.

E-Commerce Minister Stephen Timms, said:

"The UK electronics industry contributes more than £23 billion per year to the UK economy and is vital to innovation and productivity in many other industries, such as the automotive, medical, consumer electronics, and telecommunications sectors.

"The new Electronics Innovation and Growth Team represents a chance for us to build on a world-class industry.

"Tackling the challenges the industry faces, from increasing global competition and rapidly developing market, and implementing a shared vision through a strategic approach can help the electronics industry achieve its full potential."

The steering board will be chaired by David Kynaston, a Vice President of Intellect, the trade body for the IT, telecommunications and electronics industry. It will report to Trade and Industry Secretary Patricia Hewitt.

David Kynaston said:

"The electronics industry is worth £23bn a year and employs nearly 1/2 a million people in the UK. We are therefore delighted with the establishment of the EIGT and the opportunity for industry to work with the government to address the issues faced by this key sector."

The EIGT board will look at all major aspects of the electronics industry including the design, manufacture and distribution of electronic components. It will also look at the role of key suppliers and other groups who will have a significant future impact on electronics manufacturing.
