The UK needs to better understand the changing shape of UK electronics– says Intellect
Intellect, the trade association for the IT, telecoms and electronics industries has today embarked upon a significant survey, which is a part of a wider look at the global competitiveness of the UK electronics industry, and is designed to examine offshore activities. In particular, it will look at the strategies companies are pursing in making investment and location decisions. This unique survey should shed light on the considerable challenges and opportunities for growth and enable the UK to better understand the changing shape of the electronics industry.
In partnership with the Electronics Innovation and Growth Team (EIGT), Intellect has launched a new survey 'Sourcing Electronic Manufacturing in the Modern World'. The first of its kind, the survey will attempt to fill in many of the knowledge gaps which currently exist, and which Intellect feels are clouding the view of the real factors affecting the UK electronics industry. It will open the can on the issue of 'offshore', question the level of migration that is actually taking place, and look at what motivation is driving the shift to the 'low cost' regions – ultimately painting a clear picture of the changing shape of UK electronics.
"The UK has been in the dark for too long over the real shape of its electronics industry," said Peter Maguire, Director of Components and Manufacturing Services, Intellect. "Reports stating that business is going off shore have been coming in thick and fast, but there are no quantifiable figures to confirm exactly how much and its impact on the industry, in fact there are no figures at all."
"The UK electronics industry contributes more than £23 billion per year to the UK economy, in addition to being a hot bed of innovation and as well as being vital to productivity in many other industries. If Intellect and the EIGT are to be successful in tackling the challenges facing the industry, then we must first find out what those challenges actually are. It is only by conducting this timely and in-depth research that we will be able to develop a roadmap for the industry’s future, and to begin to make specific recommendations to ensure that the electronics industry remains a viable and flourishing part of the UK economy."
