Quality is "Best ever" in Healthcare IT Effectiveness Awards 2003
The quality of the entries to the Healthcare IT Effectiveness Awards (HITEA) 2003 have been of the highest standard since the awards began in 1996, according to the Awarding Consortium.
Entries from right across the UK healthcare sector have competed within two main categories; Best example of technological innovation and Best use of IT in any healthcare sector. An overall winner will receive an award for Best use of IT in the health service. Finalist nominations include entries from - Walsall PCT; Walsall Acute Trust & Walsall Social Services; St Mary's Hospital; Brunel University, Chorley Wood Health Centre & John Radcliffe Hospital; Calderdale & Huddersfield NHS Trust; Wirral Hospital NHS Trust, and St. Thomas' NHS Hospital Trust.
Recognising and rewarding excellence in healthcare information management has never been more important with the national NHS IT programme due to get underway during 2003. As well as demonstrating how effective use of IT will enhance the service received by the patient, the entries are systems and processes that are easily transferable throughout the NHS.
Charles Ward, Intellect Director and Chairman of the Awarding Consortium said, "These examples deliver a clear message for the national programme. Technology is only an enabler. It is the attitude, commitment and willingness to change of those using it that will deliver real improvements in efficiency and most importantly, patient care. Front line users must feel that they own the programme if it is to be the success that the NHS, and the country, needs"
Dr Glyn Hayes, Chairman of the British Computer Society Healthcare Informatics Committee said, "The quality of the awards shows how much knowledge and experience of successful IT lies within the health service and the supplier industries. This gives a valuable platform on which new changes can be built and should be recognised by the proposed strategic changes." The awards are the result of a wide collaboration between some of the leading companies and organisations in UK healthcare information management: The awarding consortium comprises: The Department of Health, the NHS Information Authority, Intellect, the British Journal of Healthcare Computing and Information Management, and the British Computer Society.
The key industry sponsors are BT, Lockheed Martin and InHealth Solutions.
The awards will be presented at Healthcare 2003 conference and exhibition in Harrogate on 24 March and the winners of each category will also be making case study presentations at the event.
