Implementation of WEEE and ROHS Directives must be cost effective for UK business, says Intellect
Intellect, the trade association for the UK hi-tech industry, has today called on the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) to ensure that the implementation of the WEEE and RoHS Directives is undertaken in a cost effective manner and with a minimised bureaucratic burden on UK business.
In its response to the DTI's second consultation Intellect also highlighted the need for Government to stimulate and promote markets for the recycled historic materials, the majority of which electronic and electrical equipment producers will no longer have use for.
Commenting on the response Dudley Ollis, Intellect's Head of Environmental Services said, "Clear, timely regulation and guidance from Government will be essential for all concerned if they are to be able to make the right investment decisions."
"The UK hi-tech industry is committed to the protection of the environment. However, in order to successfully implement the WEEE and RoHS Directives the DTI must ensure that this implementation is able to be conducted in a cost effective and bureaucracy free manner."
Intellect also recommended that issues such as scope (i.e. list of products covered by the Directive), and distance selling are dealt with via an EU single market solution.
"Whilst implementation must incorporate flexibility to allow choice for financing arrangements, and the way in which producers meet their obligations, it would also benefit from the development of a maintained harmonised 'scope' across Europe. It is vital that producers are not at a competitive disadvantage to those in another country, and only an EU single market solution would ensure this", concluded Ollis.
