ICT Industry Pledges Support to Office of Fair Trading Inquiry
Intellect has today pledged to play a full and active role in the Office of Fair Trading’s investigation into Government procurement practices, and has taken immediate steps to prioritise support for the investigation within its recently launched 'Better Deal for SMEs and the Public Sector' Campaign.
Speaking following news of the competition watchdog's plans to launch full market investigations, Tom Wills-Sandford, Director of Campaigns at Intellect said: "The ICT industry welcomes the OFT’s investigative report. Although reforms are being made to the public sector procurement process, the current situation means that many SMEs feel unable to realise the full benefits of engaging in this sector. This investigation will hopefully highlight the barriers and create an environment for real and lasting change."
"Our 'Better Deal for SMEs and the Public Sector' Campaign's first task is to identify the changes needed to achieve our goal of 10% of ICT Public Sector contracts being sourced from SMEs. It is clear we need to create an environment within which SMEs can compete, and successfully win business, and achieving this may include calling for legislative changes and providing advice and guidance to our members."
"The public sector is, by its very nature, a particularly conservative customer. As a result of this a customer-side education process is also needed so that the benefits of appointing SMEs, either collectively or individually to large projects are realised."
