Effective public information on switchover vital
Intellect has today welcomed the Consumer Expert Group's Report to the Government on consumer issues relating to digital switchover, agreeing that emphasis must be placed on communication of the benefits of switchover to the public, as a means to drive DTV take-up. Intellect agrees that further work needs to be undertaken to address the barriers to consumers switching to digital. However Intellect believes that the confirmation of a timetable for switchover is integral to improving consumer awareness and would also create the certainty that industry needs in order to fully support the switchover process. Intellect's Director of Consumer Electronics Laurence Harrison commented: "The Consumer Expert Group's report highlights the challenges we face in delivering digital switchover to the UK. It rightly emphasises the importance of public information, which along with a definite commitment to a timetable for switchover from the Government, will allow the next stage of development to begin." "The effective communication of information about switchover will be crucial in driving demand for digital products and raising awareness of the benefits that digital television can deliver to UK consumers. It is vital that this information is developed and disseminated in consultation with the supply chain, allowing adequate planning to take place." "Consumer Electronics manufacturers are committed to supporting switchover and developing digital product lines to add to the wide range already available to consumers. Intellect looks forward to working with consumer groups and Government with a view to producing effective and appropriate public information around digital switchover."
