Early Confirmation of Switchover Timetable Critical to Successful DTV Switchover
Intellect has today welcomed the publication of OFCOM’s draft digital replacement licences (DRLs) for consultation, and the commitment to a 2012 completion date for switchover. Intellect is committed to working in partnership with Government, Broadcasters, the DTV supply chain and other key stakeholders to ensure a clear, feasible and ultimately successful DTV switchover process.
However, Intellect has reiterated the requirement for Government confirmation of the full switchover timetable, leading up to the 2012 switchover, as soon as possible.
Laurence Harrison, Director of Consumer Electronics at Intellect said, "The Consumer Electronics Industry is a key enabler of DTV switchover, and is committed to ensuring citizens have access to the products they will need.
However, if industry is to succeed in supporting switchover Government must announce a definite switchover timetable as soon as possible. In doing so it is important that Government also re-affirms it’s control and ownership of the switchover project and demonstrates the strong leadership that will be required.
As "SwitchCo" takes shape, manufacturers and the supply chain must have appropriate representation within it, and specifically have access to the channel of communication which disseminates public information relating to switch over. Without access to, and involvement in the development of such information the Consumer Electronics industry will be unable to plan effectively for the increase in consumer demand that switchover will induce. Such a situation could effect DTV product availability and hinder the delivery of a smooth and effective DTV switchover for the citizen."
Through the work of its Digital Television Campaign Intellect is communicating the concerns, capacity and capability of the industry, and providing its members with the information and support they require in order to respond effectively to the practicalities of switchover.
Intellect extends its invitation to all Consumer Electronics firms involved in DTV switchover to contact Intellect to discuss how they too can become involved in this Campaign, or benefit from the information and support being provided.
