UK ICT Industry Growth Leads Western Europe

According to the European Information Technology Observatory (EITO) 2004 edition, launched last week, the ICT market is showing signs of strengthening, with the Western European ICT market expected to grow 3.1% in 2004, well above the marginal growth of 0.6% in 2003.

Following further analysis of this data Intellect, the trade association for the UK hi-tech industry, can announce that the UK is beating the Western European growth trends, and will overtake Germany and France in 2004 in terms of ICT industry market size.

John Higgins, Director General of Intellect commented, "This year, as with previous, the feedback we have received from our members is clear and in absolute agreement with the EITO analysis, the market is showing signs of strengthening."

"As an industry we must now continue to understand customer business drivers, and deliver ICT solutions that provide high levels of return on investment. In addition we must take advantage of potential growth areas, looking beyond recognised opportunities within the public sector, and to the green shoots that are emerging within the private sector through both infrastructure and business process outsourcing."

"In support of this the UK Government must strengthen its commitment to improve investment in education and training. In addition, more resources need to be dedicated to R&D as well as to innovation. Only once Government addresses these key issues will industry achieve sustained success within the increasingly competitive global market."

Key findings of the EITO 2004 include -

• In 2004 EITO expects growth of 3.1% for Western European ICT
• Information Technology (IT) market in Europe gradually recovering
• Telecommunications (TLC) services market in Europe driven by strong broadband access development
• Entering the digital value chain: convergence of ICT, New Media and Consumer Electronics (CE) poses new opportunities and challenges for business and government
