Local Authorities Encouraged to Showcase Innovation
The prestigious Local Government IT Excellence Awards are now in their ninth year and are open for entry. Organised by SOCITM, SOLACE and Intellect, the awards seek to highlight the use of best practice in local government and how IT has been used both effectively and innovatively to deliver Best Value public services. Last year’s winner was Halton Borough Council with their Halton Benefits Express project – which developed a unique approach to processing benefits claims, with the effect of making a real difference for people seeking benefits. This was achieved by employing an innovative use of leading edge technology, bringing the benefits office to the doorstep of the claimant. Last year’s awards also included runner-up, Liverpool City Council, with its Integrated Children’s Services project, while Surrey Partners’ (which included a Group of Public Sector Employers in Surrey) e-Recruitment Pathfinder Project and the Leicester City Council Disability Information and Communication Network were presented with the ‘highly-commended’ award. Nick Kalisperas Intellect’s Director of Public Sector commented, “The Local Government IT Excellence Awards provide us with the opportunity to recognise and reward those local government organisations that have used IT to effectively and innovatively deliver best value public services.” He continued, “We are confident that on this ninth year of the awards, the entries will continue the trend of improving standards, and that the winner will be a shinning example of a project which has challenged the traditional methods of thinking, and has shown real courage in implementation and delivery.” This year’s awards are expected to receive entries from a wide selection of local e-Government projects and are being supported by Cable & Wireless UK, Capita IT Services, Comino Plc, INPUT, and OKI Systems (UK) Ltd.
The deadline for entries is Friday 13 August 2004. The shortlist will be selected in September with the winners presented with their awards at the SOCITM Conference in October. Local authorities are encouraged to highlight the innovation and best practice taking place through their deliver of e-Government services.
