What is social exclusion?


Social exclusion is where someone suffers three or more disadvantages such as: –unemployment, living in a workless household, no qualifications, social housing, overcrowded housing, poor mental health, poor health, living alone, lacking consumer durables, enduring financial stress. In the UK this is widespread and the impact is costly.

  • Social exclusion effects an estimated 22% of the population (11.3m people)
  • 2.5% of the population (1.3m people) are a particularly high cost or high harm to the state
  • 1.3m people cost £58bn per year
