Concept Viability
Structured industry engagement is an increasingly important part of preparing for public sector procurements. Concept Viability allows public sector customers to have a two-way dialogue with the tech market; and provides suppliers with an opportunity to help shape and validate ideas, plans and requirements. The process takes place within a safe and neutral environment, which helps customers assess the opportunities and risks associated with specific projects before committing themselves to a particular approach.
14-18 November 2011Innovators invited to participate in IED Detection Demonstration DayThe Ministry of Defence (MOD) is offering UK companies the opportunity to demonstrate IED detection technology in representative situations. MOD's Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (Dstl) will host a number of "Improvised Explosive Device (IED) Detection Demonstration Days" in November 2011 against representative IED designs. The Demonstration Days are seeking IED detection technologies that have the potential for rapid exploitation. Please note that whilst MOD will make no charge for attending the demonstration, MOD will not fund applicant costs to prepare and attend the demonstration. However, if successful new technologies are identified from the trial, funding exists to fast track their development. MOD is seeking to maximise its understanding of different IED detection capabilities and engage with potential technologies, designs and suppliers who have not previously been assessed by MOD and may exist outside the traditional defence supply network. As the aim is to test technologies not previously assessed by MOD, the Demonstration Days will not be accepting technologies that are already being funded by MOD through other means. Suppliers engaged with MOD on non-detection related programmes who have relevant technologies are welcome to apply. Organisations with no previous experience of working in the Defence arena are particularly encouraged to apply. Successful applicants will be required to run their equipment themselves over a half or full day during the demonstration period. The opportunity will allow companies to demonstrate a concept, rather than collect large quantities of data. Prior to each demonstration, a small number of representative but inert IEDs and components will be buried in a test area and the candidate equipment will then be given the opportunity to detect as many threat items as possible. The testing will be conducted in a blind fashion. If a detection technology requires the presence of an energetic (explosive) material in order to operate, this should be made clear in the application. If the application is successful, a separate opportunity (outside the trials indicated here) will be made to demonstrate these technologies. The Demonstration Days will also provide successful applicants with an opportunity to engage with Dstl and military subject matter experts .
