EMSA is the only unified representative voice for the UK’s ‘turnkey’ electronics manufacturing services sector. Phil Inness is Managing Director of Axis Electronics. He formed Axis, an electronic manufacturing service provider specialising in low to medium volume, after leading a successful management buy-out of part of Texas Instruments, when it closed its Bedford operations in 1995. Phil graduated from Liverpool University with an honours degree in Electronics and started his career at Thorn EMI as a graduate trainee. Prior to starting Axis he held a number of quality and management roles in Siemens and Texas Instruments. He is on the board of Bedford Development Agency and Renaissance Bedford. Phil Inness has a BEng in Electronics and is an MBA.

The focus of the Electronics Manufacturing Services Association

Forging sustainable links between potential high technology outsourcing markets and the UK electronics manufacturing sector. It also focuses on shaping, ensuring that the regulatory and political environment in the UK is conducive to improving the competitiveness of UK CEMs. Intellect is a founding member and active participant in the UK Electronics Alliance. The UKEA pulls together the diverse group of trade associations within the electronics sector, presenting a unique opportunity for the electronics sector to speak with a co–ordinated voice.

Objectives of the Electronics Manufacturing Services Association

We believe EMSA is of great value to both suppliers and customers. We are committed to playing an integral and positive role in the development of contract manufacturing in the UK and championing the sector in discussion with Government and other stakeholders.

Electronics Manufacturing Services Association works:

  • to help members maintain a good level of awareness of developments and trends that affect the contract manufacturing marketplace
  • to provide a conduit for information exchange between Intellect members, customers and Government to ensure Intellect members have a strong voice in the media and Government on key issues and are well positioned to provide expertise and contract manufacturing expertise to help shape future policy
  • to encourage networking and collaboration with other Intellect member groups
  • to develop our profile as a Group so that we are seen as a trusted source of information regarding electronic manufacturing and best practice
  • to work in partnership with Intellect in the development a value-added package of business services for contract manufacturers

  • with key Government stakeholders, addressing problems of skills shortage and solutions for effective compliance with new environmental regulations
  • formulation of resources relating to effective outsourcing and supply chain management on the part of the UK Electronics Manufacturing Services industry

Electronics Manufacturing Services Association Code of best practice

The purpose of the Electronics Manufacturing Services Association Code of best practice is to provide a benchmark for customers and the industry against which they can measure performance. In supporting this Code of Practice, Intellect EMSA members are setting high standards of performance in the market place to ensure the effective, high quality serving of customer needs and aspirations.

Electronics Manufacturing Services Association members

A substantial number of companies from the UK Electronics Manufacturing Services sector are members of the Electronics Manufacturing Services Association. EMSA members provide services to and/or produce complex circuit boards and associated electronic equipment on behalf of Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEM’s) and design house entrepreneurs. OEM’s and design houses will typically own both the design and the brand name of the product concerned. The group seeks to identify leading edge and high technology outsourcing markets within which manufacturing in the UK is sustainable in the medium to long term.
