Intellect Annual Dinner 2012 with Alastair Campbell

The Intellect Annual Dinner is now established as the main dinner event in the Intellect calendar. The first dinner was held in 2002 at the Intercontinental Hotel when Intellect was launched. Now the event, held at The Dorchester, achieves sell-out status with over 400 guests attending.

Each year Intellect invites a well known and controversial speaker to provide the key address. Last year we were delighted to have speaking Matthew Parris, Journalist and former Sketchwriter for The Times.

Who is speaking?

Vince CableVince Cable, Secretary of State for Business, Innovation and Skills

Vince Cable was born in 1943. He was educated at Nunthorpe Grammar School in York and read Natural Science and Economics at Cambridge University, where he was President of the Union, after which he studied for a PhD at Glasgow University.

Vince worked as Treasury Finance Officer for the Kenyan Government between 1966 and 1968. From 1968 to 1974 he lectured in Economics at Glasgow University. He worked as a First Secretary in the Diplomatic Service in the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (1974-1976). He was then Deputy Director of the Overseas Development Institute, which included a period working as a Special Adviser to the then Secretary of State for Trade and Industry, John Smith MP. From 1983 to 1990, Vince worked as Special Adviser on Economic Affairs for the Commonwealth Secretary General, Sir Sonny Ramphal.

From 1990, Vince Cable worked for Shell International and in 1995 became the company's Chief Economist. He was appointed head of the economics programme at Chatham House and since becoming an MP in 1997, was appointed a fellow of Nuffield College, Oxford and was a visiting research fellow at the Centre for the Study of Global Governance at the London School of Economics.

He joined the Liberal Democrat Shadow Cabinet in October 1999 as spokesman on Trade and Industry after a spell as a junior Treasury spokesman. He has been the Liberal Democrat Shadow Chancellor since November 2003 and in March 2006, was elected as Deputy Leader of the Liberal Democrats.

He is married to Rachel with three children by his late wife, Olympia.

Alastair CampbellAlastair Campbell is the former communications director for Tony Blair. His career began in journalism, working for the Daily Mirror. He became a close advisor of Neil Kinnock, before becoming Tony Blair's spokesman in 1994. He worked with Peter Mandelson to achieve Labour's landslide 1997 victory, and rose to become one of Blair's most trusted advisors, and one of the most powerful and intriguing men behind the scenes of government. He revealed incredible insights into the corridors of power in his books 'The Blair Years' and 'The Alastair Campbell Diaries Volume One: Prelude to Power', the former of which was a Sunday Times number one bestseller, and received the Channel 4 Award for Political Book of the Year (2008).

Campbell has also published 'All in the Mind', an insightful novel about mental illness, and 'Maya', a novel about fame and the media. He is chairman of fundraising for Leukaemia and Lymphoma Research, captain of the Leukaemia Research triathlon team, and works with many mental health charities including Rethink.
