Intellect Consumer Electronics Council Chair

Adrian Northover-Smith, Head of Corporate Public Affairs at Sony UK Ltd, began his career with Sony in June 1993 working for Television Marketing in Sony Europe, before moving to the Digital Media Europe team responsible for producing set top boxes for Sky, Canal+ and ITV digital. 

Adrian started working for Sony UK, based at the head office in Weybridge in June 2000. His first role within Sony UK was Digital TV Product Manager, then Digital Development Manager for both the TV and Home Video groups. This gave him great exposure to the emerging markets of High Definition (HD) and Blu-Ray, and he managed the Sky-Sony HD UK launch project in 2006.

During this period, part of Adrian’s role was to interface with industry bodies and Government departments for ‘Digital Switchover’ and he became Sony’s representative in the ‘HD for All campaign’ – which successfully lobbied the Government to get HD onto the Freeview platform.

In 2007, Adrian was appointed Head of Products and Services development. This group was responsible for creating the ‘environment’ in which Sony could launch products such as the ‘Reader’ and other devices enhanced by content, into the UK market.

Working with key radio manufacturers under Intellect’s ‘Digital Radio Working Group’, Adrian contributed to the work that eventually became the digital radio section of the ‘Digital Britain’ report. This in turn became the basis of the ‘Digital Economy Bill’ which was passed by the previous Government.

In his current role as Head of Corporate Public Affairs, Adrian represents Sony UK at various industry associations including Intellect and the Digital Television Group. He also acts as the interface between Sony UK, Central and Local Government, Broadcasters, Platform Operators, Internet Service Providers, Trade Associations and Charities.

Adrian became the chair of Intellect's consumer electronics council in April 2011.
