Today’s Chief Information Officers are much more than just head geeks’. They now need to be close to their organisations’ respective business requirements in order to ensure that technology (underpinning everything) is deployed strategically. This tends to be better understood in the private sector than in the public sector, and means that CIOs are now accorded higher status but also increased amounts of responsibility. In the public sector, CIOs face a number of unique challenges, including the need to work across government and to keep up to speed with ministerial imperatives and new policies.
