Energy and Environment
“The high-tech industry using its knowledge and capabilities to reduce its impact on the world’s climate, and help others to do the same”. As we become increasingly dependant on technology in our daily lives, the amount of energy required to keep our numerous devices functioning is increasing. Lower production costs and faster technological change mean that consumers and businesses change products more frequently, creating new recycling challenges.
With dwindling energy supplies and global warming, further regulation is likely; however the technology industry also has the potential to be a major part of the solution to these environmental challenges.
Benefits of being an Intellect member:
- Regular opportunities to shape and influence environmental and energy legislation affecting your company and your industry.
- Continual provision of early warning and guidance on how and when to comply with legislation and what it
means for you, your business and your bottom line.
- Potential availability of product subsidies for the promotion of the most energy efficient products.
- With corporate social responsibility high on our agenda, access our ‘Who Cares Wins` programme which helps you assess your environmental performance and implement improvements.
- Input to thought leadership on the role of technology in tackling climate change and an opportunity to promote your case studies to a wide audience.
Our core challenges:
- demonstrating that the technology sector is part of the solution to climate change. We are optimising the energy efficiency of our own products and services and want to help other sectors reduce their emissions through the application of our technologies
- helping to create the most appropriate policy regulatory framework for the technology sector such as WEEE (Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment)
- helping our members optimise their businesses’ environmental performance
- positioning Intellect as the lead body considering the climate change agenda for the technology sector
- ensuring Intellect remain at the forefront of debate on both the UK and European stage
Our work and achievements
- launched ‘High Tech: Low Carbon – The role of technology in tackling climate change’ report
- partnership with Warwick University to develop thought leadership on the application of technology to reduce energy use in other sectors and identify supporting policy measures
- run an influential group of members, focused on environmental policy and regulatory issues who help ensure a favourable implementation of a number of regulations including WEEE, and RoHS (Restriction of Hazardous Substances)
- helped create a market for energy efficient products by managing a product subsidy scheme for member companies that rewards efficiency, and develops appropriate marketing including the ‘Energy Savings Recommended Consumer’ logo
Facts and stats
- In just 200 years, the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere - the major gas that causes climate change - has increased by 30%.
- In April 2007, Gartner estimated that the ICT sector was responsible for around 2% of global CO2 emissions.
- Spending on the development of new energy and environmental technologies grew by 14% in 2007, exceeding $55 billion worldwide. This figure continues to rise.
- A TV would now have to be on continual stand-by for nearly a month to use the same electricity as boiling a kettle. Industry has improved stand-by power consumption by TVs over 90% in the last ten years.
