Colin Paynter is Chief Executive Officer of Astrium Limited in the UK. Astrium is a wholly owned subsidiary of EADS – the European Aeronautic Defence and Space Company. Astrium is Europe's leading space company with activities covering satellites, space transportation, and space services. In the UK, Astrium designs and manufactures complete civil and military systems covering telecommunications, Earth observation, science and navigation including all spacecraft avionics and equipment. EADS Astrium employs over 3000 people in the UK at sites in Portsmouth, Stevenage and Poynton.

In addition to his UK duties, on 1st December 2010 Colin became responsible for Strategy & Business Development for Astrium reporting to the CEO, François Auque. Prior to this, from 2007 to 2010 Colin was Head of Business Growth for Astrium Services which covered Mergers and Acquisitions, Business Development and Sales & Marketing.

Colin studied engineering and mathematics at Loughborough University before his first position as a Control Systems Engineer with CAP Group, joining BAe SEMA and becoming Director of the Tactical Communications Systems Division. He then joined BAe Systems as Managing Director of Communications and Infrastructure Division. He was appointed as CEO of Astrium Ltd in 2002.

Colin's career spans both the civil and military fields and he has successfully run large multi-company, multi-national programmes.

Colin is an experienced director with strong P&L, balance sheet and modern governance experience.

Since heading Astrium in the UK, Colin has worked closely with BIS, DIUS, MoD, and other Government departments to increase Government and Parliamentary awareness of the UK space industry - including its world-leading technology and contribution to the economy and society at large. He played a leading role in the Space Innovation and Growth Team which reported to Government in January 2010.

Colin lives in Hampshire, he is married with two children and personal interests include sailing, rugby, and badminton.
