The health and social care system in the UK needs to be flexible and agile to meet the needs of citizens today, tomorrow and in the future. The NHS is facing unprecedented demographic, social and financial pressures. Information technology has a critical role to play in in transforming the way care is provided. Significant progress is taking place, but continued education, investment and deployment of infromation technology is vital to make the health and social care services sustainable and safer.

Joint Plan with DH

In September DH announced it's plan to work with Intellect to establish a vibrant healthcare IT market.

The plan is designed to foster the right conditions to enable a vibrant healthcare IT market and build confidence in the wider use of IT as a means to benefit patient care. An updated joint plan can be found below.

Intellect's Healthcare Council has agreed to develop the industry position on these four policy topics, from September 2011 to September 2012. Intellect members are encouraged to get involved by contacting Intellect staff.

Value of information technology in health and social care
- demonstrating how information technology can deliver the Quality, Innovation, Productivity and Prevention (QIPP) agenda.
Commissioning IT toolbox
- provide emerging commissioning organisations with a view on what we believe their toolbox of information technologies should look like to ge the job done.
Patient empowerment
- looking at how information technology can empower patients to be in control, better informed and take better care of themselves.
Integrating the new NHS
- integration is key for a sustainble NHS. We will look at how information flow, management and collaboration can be enabled through information technology solutions.

The Healthcare Council is also undertaking a stakeholder engagement plan to broaden our partnerships and reach out with our positions to influence policies and the health and social care market.
